Brickwork V’s Timber

Brickwork V's Timber

As bricklayers we are slightly biased when it comes to what material is best to use for building projects, and there are no prizes for guessing which one we would choose! Yep, you guessed it……. Bricks. One of the many questions we get asked is what are the benefits of bricks compared to timber? So, we decided to write this blog to give a brief overview.

Brickwork benefits

Lower maintenance, pest and weather resistant!

Timber structures can suffer damage from termites and moisture which can lead to wood rot. Because of this they require a lot more maintenance which can be time consuming and costly.

Longer lasting!

Because timber projects require higher maintenance and are susceptible to weather and pest damage, brick structures are more durable, and a well-built brick structure can last twice as long as a timber structure. Remember the story of the 3 little pigs!

Cost effective!

Although Brick structures usually have a higher initial cost, choosing to build with bricks can save you $$$$ in the long run. This is due to the low maintenance and durability of bricks. If you are building a house, brick structures may help to reduce energy bills, due to better insulation. Keeping your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Fire resistant!

Although both materials can be damaged during a fire, timber is more vulnerable than brick and fire can spread faster in a timber home.

Soundproof!

Due to the thickness, houses made from bricks will block more noise than timber. If you live in a busy street and want to keep the noise out or want more privacy in your home, then bricks would be a better option.

Although we are team brick, both materials have their purpose. When it comes to timber structures, they generally have a lower initial cost and are more sustainable. When choosing which one is best for your project it will come down to personal circumstances and preference however, if you have been struggling to decide, we hope this article has given you some helpful information on the benefits of using bricks for your project.
